Day of the Ukrainian Sea

April 29, 1918 is one of the most glorious dates in the history of the Ukrainian Navy - Fleet Day, the Day of the Ukrainian Sea. It was on this day that the Black Sea Fleet, which had previously been under Russian command, solemnly raised Ukrainian yellow and blue flags on its ships by order of the commander. This event was an unprecedented demonstration of the will of Ukrainian sailors to national self-determination and state independence.

The Ukrainian flag flew on most of the ships of the fleet stationed in Sevastopol. By order of Rear Admiral Mykhailo Sablin, it was proclaimed: The Black Sea Fleet is under the control of the Ukrainian People's Republic. It was not just a military act - it was a national awakening, a confirmation that Ukraine was capable of having its own armed forces, including at sea.

The symbolism of this step is enormous. The navy has always been one of the main elements of state sovereignty. And the fact that Ukrainian sailors massively supported the Ukrainian government at that time meant an unequivocal choice in favor of national identity - even despite the difficult international situation and political instability.

Since 1919, this day has been officially celebrated in the UPR as the Day of the Ukrainian Sea or the Day of the Fleet.
