Abstract
“Tsingtao-Wien-Kyiv” is a historical novel by film director Ivan Kanivets, who did a lot of research of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921. Summer of 1914. A young man from Lviv, Alexander, is a guest on a luxury yacht that travels around the world. At one of its stops - Tsingtao, a German colony in China, a paradise on earth - relaxed travelers are caught by World War I. In the whirlwind of "great history" that picks up Alexander, he must determine who he is - a loyal citizen of the empire or a Ukrainian patriot. He must understand how and why can he live when the old world around him is collapsing. He has to find a girl from the past who comes to him in his dreams to understand who his true love is.

About the author
Ivan Kanivets, born in Kyiv in 1978, received his master's degree at the Department of Telecommunications, Faculty of Aerospace Systems, National Technical University of Ukraine "KPI", but his desire to be creative won out, so he went on to receive directing degrees from Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts and Karpenko-Kary Kyiv National University of Technology and Arts. Because of his passion for history, he has been working on documentaries about Ukraine's past since the beginning of the century. Since 2009, he has been covering the struggle of Ukrainians for freedom in the first decades of the twentieth century.
He is a screenwriter and director of documentaries:
"Neptune's Trident" (2010), about the raising of Ukrainian flags by the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol in 1918;
"Ukrainian Revolution, memories of Vseolod Petriv" (2012-2015), about the Kost Hordiienko Regiment, one of the most legendary units of the Ukrainian army in 1917-1918;
"Generation of Freedom" (in production) is the first Ukrainian historical 3D documentary about the events of 1917-1918.
Author of scientific and popular science articles on film studies, scripts for documentaries and feature films about Ukrainian history, and historical short stories. Multiple winner of the historical short story contest "ProMinule". Lecturer at the Karpenko-Kary Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts, author of the manual Variative Cinema: Directing Screenplays with Changing Plots. Head of the jury of the International Historical Film Festival "Out of Time". Together with his wife, he runs the film blog "Cinevision".
